Over the weekend of February 15 and 16, 2025, the club put K4US on the air from the Mount Vernon greenhouse on the original grounds of George Washington’s estate to celebrate his 293rd birthday. Members raised antennas outside the greenhouses and kept several HF stations busy making contacts across the country.
The George Washington Birthday Special Event is held each February to celebrate our first president’s birthday. It’s free and open to the public, especially anyone curious about ham radio. Members arrive around 8:30 AM on Saturday to set up, and the stations are usually on the air by 10 AM. Everyone is welcome to get on the air under the club call sign, K4US, and talk to people from around the world, and we love putting kids on the radio too. Saturday is the best day for newcomers and guests to give it a try. On Sunday a few members come back to make some final contacts before the stations come down late in the morning. To join us next year, email social@mvarc.org for details.
Location: The greenhouse at George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate, Mount Vernon, Virginia
