On January 24, 2026, a group of MVARC members braved the cold for Winter Field Day, operating from a heated pop-up shelter at my QTH. We kept the stations running, warmed up with hot drinks, and finished the day with a group photo and pizza.
Winter Field Day is more than a contest; it’s an emergency communications exercise. The goal is to sharpen our skills by operating in less-than-ideal conditions and show we can keep communications going through freezing temperatures, snow or ice. It’s about preparedness, technical skill and, most of all, community.
After the club’s monthly breakfast that morning, members came over to my QTH from 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM to operate, observe, or just enjoy some “eyeball QSOs.” Local emergency preparedness groups were invited to join us, and for anyone who couldn’t make it to our site, we pointed them to the great setups hosted by our friends at the Alexandria, Woodbridge and Vienna clubs. More than anything, we just love getting people on the air.
