From 2 p.m. Saturday, June 27 to 2 p.m. Sunday, June 28, 2026, the Mount Vernon Amateur Radio Club took part in ARRL Field Day, the largest on-air amateur radio event in the United States. We set up on the field next to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, the same site where the club tests its emergency radio equipment, and opened our stations to the public.
Field Day is hosted nationwide by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL). It is part contest and part public demonstration of how hams can communicate without cell networks or the internet. As club president Corey puts it, Field Day is “a vital rehearsal for when modern communications fail.”
Under the K4US banner, members ran stations under the canopies and from the back of an SUV. Visitors stopped by the information table to meet local operators, learn how amateur radio supports community emergency response, and try the equipment for themselves, and we helped some of our youngest visitors try making a contact.
Field Day is open to the public. Children, adults and grandparents are all welcome, and it’s a fun time for everyone.
