This week’s challenge is to make an FT8 contact on 10 meters. If you followed Monday’s IC-7300 post or Tuesday’s FT-991A post, your radio is already talking to the computer. Now let’s get WSJT-X set up and make that first contact.
Level: Beginner | Time: About 20 minutes | Note: Menu names are from current WSJT-X versions.
What You’ll Need
- WSJT-X, free from the WSJT project at Princeton.
- A time-sync program for your computer. FT8 needs your clock to be within about a second.
- A 10-meter antenna, if your current antenna doesn’t tune 10m well.
Step 1: Sync Your Clock
FT8 transmits in 15-second time slots, so your computer clock has to be accurate. Windows’ built-in sync often isn’t close enough. Use a time-sync utility and set it to update frequently.
Step 2: Enter Your Station Info
In WSJT-X, open File > Settings > General and enter your call sign and your 4-character grid square. Then check the Radio and Audio tabs match the settings from Monday’s or Tuesday’s post.
Step 3: Go to 10 Meters
Make sure the mode is FT8 (under the Mode menu). In the band box on the main window, choose 10m. WSJT-X will tune your radio to the standard FT8 frequency, 28.074 MHz.
Step 4: Listen First
Click Monitor and watch the Band Activity panel. Every 15 seconds you should see new decodes. If nothing shows up, the band may be closed, so try again late morning or early afternoon.
Step 5: Answer a CQ
Find a line that starts with CQ and double-click it. WSJT-X fills in the station’s call and turns on Enable Tx. It handles the rest of the exchange automatically. When it finishes, click Log QSO. That’s your contact!
Gotchas
- Decodes but no replies? Check your clock first. A few seconds off is enough to be ignored.
- Keep power modest. FT8 works well at low power, and it’s easier on your radio.
- Watch ALC. Keep it at or near zero for a clean signal.
