Florida Hams Kept Communications Ready During Hurricane Isaias

When Hurricane Isaias came ashore on the Florida Panhandle this month, amateur radio volunteers were ready. ARRL reports that hams in Santa Rosa, Nassau, Lake, Pinellas and Leon counties pitched in. In Santa Rosa County, volunteers staffed the county Emergency Operations Center and the evacuation shelter at the Milton Community Center, passing situation updates between the two. Others worked at the State EOC in Tallahassee, standing by to keep messages moving if regular networks went down.

Arc, W4CPD, the ARRL Northern Florida Section Emergency Coordinator, called ham radio a dependable backup resource. It is a good reminder to check in on your local ARES net.
