Here is a treat for Saturday morning. Grimeton Radio Station in Sweden, call sign SAQ, will spin up its 1924 alternator transmitter on Saturday, October 24, for United Nations Day and send a peace message in CW on 17.2 kHz VLF. Start-up is at 12:30 UTC, SAQ calls VVV at 12:45 UTC and the message goes out at 13:00 UTC (8:30 to 9 AM Eastern). Short test transmissions may also happen today, Friday, October 23, between 11:00 and 14:00 UTC.
It is described as the only preserved pre-electronic radio transmitter still working, so this is radio history you can actually hear. Can’t tune down to 17.2 kHz? The station streams it live on YouTube from 12:20 UTC.
